We finally pulled the plug on Informix this week. Its' a bittersweet day for me. On the one hand, we will be fully free of that awful database. Good times. On the other hand, it means pulling the plug on the replication service that I wrote to keep the data in sync. As much as I hated the fact that I had to write such a service, I was pretty pleased with the end result. It performed well, was very stable and extremely memory-efficient. The only problems it ever ran into would be when the server would be rebooted and someone would forget to turn it back on. And even then, it would catch up very quickly, even if it missed a week worth of transactions. It took about four months of working 1/2 time on it to get it "just right" (giving the more heavily used tables with blob data their own threads and such) and then only ended up running for four months. We hardly even got to know it!
Oh well. At least one chapter of my long nightmare is over, and I can finally uninstall the miserable Server Studio client from my machine. Both good things. I wanted to take an axe to the Informix box but those pesky systems guys want to use it for something else. The nerve
